Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at salma@skhanlcsw.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You can book an appointment with SMK Therapy by emailing our office at  salma@skhanlcsw.com or by filling out an online Contact Me form on our website to schedule a free 20 minute consultation.

SMK Therapy offers individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy. And I help individual and couples or families deal with issues such as trauma related to NPD and generational trauma, guilt and shame, relationship issues, anxiety and depression, and women's issues.

I provide only online, telehealth sessions throughout all of California. Sessions are offered through secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing and you can access your session from any safe, comfortable location, whether you're at home, office, or somewhere in between.

I’m an out-of-network provider, which means I don’t accept insurance and I don't bill insurance directly. However, many of my clients use their out-of-network (OON) benefits to get partial reimbursement from their insurance company. That  means that I can provide you with a superbill to assist in claiming reimbursement.
How it works:

  1. You pay for sessions out of pocket.
  2. Each month, a superbill (an invoice with the necessary insurance codes) is automatically generated in your client portal and sent to you via email.
  3. You electronically submit this superbill to your insurance company.
  4. If your plan includes OON mental health benefits, they may send you a reimbursement check.

A superbill is similar to an invoice, but it also lists the medical codes your insurance company requires for reimbursement. The most common CPT codes I use are:

  • 90791: Initial intake session
  • 90837: 50-minute therapy session

Tip: Before starting, it’s a good idea to call your insurance provider to ask if your plan covers out-of-network psychotherapy. They may request the CPT codes or ask about the type of session.

SMK Therapy offers a free 20 minute consultation to all new, prospective clients to explore if we are a good fit, and to decide together the next steps.

The rates for counseling and therapy services are:

Individual session (53min):      $150

Couples/Relational (53min):   $200

Couples/Relational (75min):   $225

I also offer a sliding scale for private-pay clients. Pre-paid sessions with a bundle package can save you money.

  • 5% off 3 sessions
  • 10% off 5 sessions or more

Payment is due at time of service. All major credit/debit cards and HSA/FSA are accepted and will be collected and filed, and payment will be charged on the date of scheduled session, or at the time of bundle / package purchase. Unfortunately, no refunds are available for package purchases, however I do my best to accommodate reschedules.

SMK Therapy offers two (2) versions of Relationship Counseling Workshops that can fit into your unique situation and schedule.

4 Hour Relational Counseling Workshop:  $700 / couple

A single workshop that supports couples who are either strengthening their bond or exploring uncoupling with intention and clarity.

Workshop Goals:

  • Strengthen understanding of relational patterns, needs, and blocks.
  • Build or refine communication and conflict skills.
  • Clarify alignment, goals, and readiness for next steps.
  • For uncoupling, identify structure, grounding, and guidance for a mutually respectful transition.

6 Session Structured Relational Program: $1000

A semi-therapeutic, course-like program that blends education, skills-building, and cultural insight without becoming long-term therapy.

Format: 6 sessions, 53 minutes each
Focus: Skills, structure, clarity, communication work, and relational alignment
Suitable for: premarital couples, recoupling, couples in high conflict, or couples considering uncoupling

Once your session has been booked, that time is reserved for you, so I kindly ask and must insist, on a 24hr cancellation policy. I ask that you notify me 24hrs in advance of your scheduled appointment time. Cancellations with less than 24hrs notice will be charged the full session rate. In order to avoid the cancellation fee, however, you may reschedule for another date within the same calendar week (given availability).

A Good Faith Estimate (GFE) is a federally required document that outlines your expected costs for care, so you’re never surprised by a bill. As part of the No Surprises Act, all healthcare providers must offer a written estimate of fees to clients who are not using insurance. This is intended to improve transparency and protect your rights as a client.
